I don’t have a vaguely interesting back story for this post; it’s just the culmination of years of self-examination and, finally, realization. (Remember, I’m the girl who puts the anal in analyze.) So I’m just going to hit you with it.
Don’t try to become someone else’s dream. Instead, become the person you’ve always dreamed of being–and let him (or her or them) love you for it.
Whether you’re a child whose parents want to live vicariously through you, someone’s prodigy, or that person who has wrapped up another’s heart, I’ve got news for you: you won’t fit. Sure, you might come close, or some parts will fit–but others won’t. But you’ll never be a perfect match for someone else’s expectations. That’s a fantasy.
Be yourself. Pursue what you love. Get better at it every day.
They’ll love you for it.
OR
if they don’t “love you for it, they’ll leave you for it…or you’ll leave them and that’s OK. A favorite author, Richard Rohr says “our authentic self is the face we had before we were born”… Now there’s a dream for us!
Amen, Shelby!
I had to chuckle……ok….I almost busted a gut laughing your admission in this post. I remember a time you scrambled like a cornered animal when you first let it slip out in a phone conversation about being so anal about things. AND that I used to tease you occasionally about that less than politically correct comment at the time. I want to believe it was though/during those times we developed a friendship that has caused me to continue watching you unfurl your wings butterfly. Your topic is dead on target Tammy, being who you are is hard to do but necessary to enjoy life to its fullest. Live by the words in your post my friend, come hell or high water be who you are…..I for one think that person is very special.
Thanks, Mike!
In the words of Steve Jobs, “Your time is limited, don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma, which is living the result of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of other opinions drown your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition, they somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.”
Eloquent truth.
